Different Types of Rugs: A Guide to Finding Your Style

When you start looking at rugs, you'll quickly realise there are way more options out there than you might have thought. Each type has its own personality, its own strengths, and its own place in a home. We thought it'd be helpful to break down the main ones so you can figure out what actually works for you.

Wool Rugs

Wool is kind of the gold standard in the rug world, and for good reason. It's incredibly durable, naturally stain-resistant, and it actually gets softer and more beautiful the more you use it. There's something about a quality wool rug that just feels luxe underfoot.

The downside? They can be pricier upfront. But we think of it as an investment piece. That's serious longevity. They also tend to be great at regulating temperature, so they feel warm in winter and cool in summer. Pretty clever.

Cotton and Linen Rugs

These have a completely different vibe. They're lighter, more casual, and have that natural, relaxed feel. They're perfect if you're going for a Scandinavian, coastal, or bohemian aesthetic. Cotton especially is super easy to care for and often more affordable than wool.

The trade-off is they're not quite as durable as wool and won't stand up as well in high-traffic areas. But in a bedroom, a guest room, or somewhere you want that soft, breathable feel? They're brilliant. Plus, they're often easier on the wallet.

Jute and Natural Fibre Rugs

If you want to bring that earthy, organic vibe into your space, natural fibre rugs are where it's at. Jute, sisal, seagrass - they all have this beautiful texture and that unmistakable natural look. They're sustainable, they're trendy, and they actually feel good under your feet.

Just be aware that these fibres can be a bit rough initially (though they soften with wear), and they're not the best for areas where you'll spill liquids regularly. They absorb moisture, which isn't ideal. But in a living room, entryway, or office? They add amazing character.

Synthetic Rugs

Don't sleep on synthetic rugs. Yes, they're man-made, but modern synthetics are actually really good. They're stain-resistant, incredibly durable, and often way more affordable than natural fibres. They're brilliant if you have kids, pets, or just want something you don't have to stress about.

The honest truth? They won't last quite as long as wool, and some people find they don't have the same "feel" as natural materials. But if practicality and budget are your priorities, synthetics get the job done and they do it well.

Persian and Oriental Rugs

These are the classics. Hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs are works of art and they become genuine heirlooms over time. They're often statement pieces that people build entire rooms around.

They're typically pricey and require a bit more care, but if you appreciate traditional design and don't mind investing in something truly special, these rugs are stunning. They genuinely improve with age.

Kilims and Flat-Weave Rugs

Kilims are lighter weight and more flexible than traditional knotted rugs, with bold geometric patterns that feel modern and artistic. Flat-weave just means there's no pile, it's woven flat, which makes them lightweight and easier to move around.

These are great if you want something with personality and colour without the bulk. They're also easier to clean and maintain, which is a bonus. Perfect for adding visual interest to a space without it feeling too heavy.

Modern and Contemporary Rugs

These are all about clean lines, bold colours, and interesting textures. Modern rugs often feature geometric patterns, abstract designs, or solid colours that feel fresh and current. They're designed to complement contemporary interiors without being too busy.

They're usually a safe bet if you're not sure what you like because they work with almost any modern aesthetic. Plus, there's so much variety in contemporary design that you're guaranteed to find something that speaks to you.

Finding Your Type

The best rug for you really depends on what you love, how you live, and what vibe you're going for. Some people know immediately, they'll see a Persian rug and fall in love. Others need to explore a bit to figure out what feels right.

Browse our collection and take your time. Look at different types, imagine them in your space, and think about how you actually live. The rug that looks perfect in your head isn't always the one that works best in reality, and that's okay.
